What hyaluronic acid does at night
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a molecule that attracts and retains water. Applied in the evening, it acts as a hydration reservoir in the upper layers of the epidermis, during the skin's nocturnal repair phase.
HA needs water to function
Without sufficient moisture or a "sealing" layer to retain it, HA can become drying — by drawing water from deeper layers instead of providing it. This is why it is ideally applied to slightly damp skin, followed by a cream. And this is where the pillowcase comes in: if the fabric absorbs part of the product, its effectiveness decreases.
Why cotton intercepts your active ingredients
Cotton is a highly absorbent fiber — excellent for a towel, less ideal for a pillow. With each contact of the face, it absorbs moisture from the skin and some of the serum residues on the surface. Over a night, with several changes of position, the phenomenon repeats.
What silk does differently
Mulberry silk is composed mainly of fibroin and sericin, two proteins with a compact structure much less absorbent than cotton. The optimal routine: silk + hyaluronic acid
The silk pillowcase amplifies the effectiveness of your serum — it does not replace it. The order of application remains crucial:
- Gentle cleansing — HA penetrates better on clean skin.
- HA on slightly damp skin — it seals in the water already present instead of drawing it out.
- Light sealant — a night cream or a few drops of oil to form a barrier.
- Silk pillowcase — it doesn't soak up what you've just applied and lets it work until you wake up.
