7 Myths About Silk Pillowcases (and What the Facts Say)

S
Silk Bed Linen Expert · Sleep Beauty · Updated July 8, 2026
In brief — "Too expensive," "fragile," "just marketing": most objections to silk pillowcases stem from two confusions—mixing up fabric care with daily performance, and comparing materials with very different properties. We're honestly addressing 7 common misconceptions.
Mulberry silk pillowcase
The pillowcase is the only textile surface in direct contact with skin and hair all night long.

You've surely heard at least one of these. However, when these claims are confronted with the facts, the picture is more nuanced. Here are the seven most common misconceptions—without shortcuts and without miracle promises.

1. "It's a placebo effect"

Silk is significantly smoother than cotton: it generates less friction against the skin and hair. This is a mechanical effect, not psychological—fewer sleep marks upon waking, less snagging on hair lengths. Read: why mulberry silk makes a difference.

2. "Good quality cotton is just as good"

Cotton has real qualities, but it absorbs moisture—and with it, some of your nighttime skincare products. Silk absorbs much less and allows your creams to work on your skin. The thread count does not change this property of the fiber.

3. "It's fragile, it doesn't last"

Classic confusion between delicate care and resistance to use. Yes, silk should be washed gently (30°C, no tumble drying); but it is a naturally robust fabric, used for centuries. With proper care, a silk pillowcase lasts several years.

4. "It's only for mature skin"

On the contrary: friction and absorption from cotton accumulate before becoming visible. Silk acts preventively and is suitable for all skin types—sensitive, combination, or blemish-prone.

5. "Satin is the same and cheaper"

Satin is not a material: it's a weave, often polyester. It mimics the shine of silk but traps heat, generates static electricity, and does not have the same properties. Details: silk or satin?

6. "It makes no difference to hair"

On cotton, hair snags with every movement, lifting the cuticles and promoting frizz and breakage. On silk, it glides. The hair types that see the difference fastest are curly, coily, kinky, or color-treated hair. See cotton or silk for hair.

7. "The price is not justified"

Compared to the contact time—every night, for several years—the cost per night of a silk pillowcase remains low. The right criterion is the cost of use, not the price tag; and most importantly: is the benefit real? Physically, yes.

What about density (Momme)?

Momme measures fabric density: the higher it is, the denser and more durable the pillowcase. For skin and hair benefits, a 22 Momme is perfectly sufficient for daily use; a higher density simply lasts longer. Everything is explained in the Momme density guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Three criteria: the stated composition (100% mulberry silk), the indicated Momme (generally 19 to 25 for a quality pillowcase) and OEKO-TEX® certification. Polyester satin never indicates Momme, because there is no silk grammage to measure.

Yes: delicate program at maximum 30°C, in a laundry bag, with a gentle, enzyme-free, bleach-free detergent. No strong spinning or tumble drying; dry flat or in the shade.

Mulberry silk is hypoallergenic and eliminates a source of nocturnal mechanical irritation. It does not treat acne and is not a substitute for treatment, but it is often recommended as a complement to an adapted routine.
