How to wash a silk bonnet?

S
Silk Bedding Expert · Sleep Beauty · updated July 8, 2026

Your silk night cap protects your hair every night. To keep it effective—soft, shiny, and hygienic—it needs to be washed correctly and regularly. Silk is a delicate natural fiber that reacts poorly to heat, bleach, and enzyme detergents. Here is the complete method for washing your silk cap without damaging it.

⚡ The essentials in 30 seconds
  • Hand wash in cold water or machine wash at 30°C on a delicate cycle in a mesh bag
  • Use special silk detergent only — no enzymes, no bleach, no fabric softener
  • Never tumble dry, never direct sunlight — air dry in the shade
  • Frequency: every 2 to 3 uses
  • Never twist or wring forcefully

How often should you wash a silk cap?

Every 2 to 3 uses is the recommended frequency. Mulberry silk is a breathable and naturally hypoallergenic fiber, which allows it to stay clean longer than a cotton cap. However, the cap is in direct contact with your hair, hair products, and sebum every night. Regular washing is essential to maintain its effectiveness and hygiene.

✓ Good to know If you use a lot of hair products (oils, creams, leave-ins), wash your cap every 2 nights. Product buildup reduces the slipperiness of silk and diminishes its protective properties. As with silk stained by products, acting early is always more effective.

Hand washing — step-by-step method

This is the gentlest and most recommended method for preserving silk in the long term.

1
Prepare your sink

Fill with cold or lukewarm water, maximum 30°C. Dissolve a small amount of special silk detergent in the water before immersing the cap.

2
Turn the cap inside out

This protects the outer surface of the cap and preserves the colors. Particularly important for dark colors.

3
Immerse and press gently

Gently press the fabric without rubbing or twisting. Silk does not respond well to mechanical friction. Let it soak for 3 to 5 minutes maximum.

4
Rinse thoroughly

Rinse with cold water until all product is gone. Detergent residue can make silk less slippery and irritate the scalp.

5
Remove excess water without twisting

Gently press the cap between your hands or between two clean towels. Never twist — this distorts the elastic and the shape of the cap.

Machine washing — mandatory precautions

Machine washing is possible with these strict rules:

1
Place the cap in a laundry bag

Mandatory to protect the silk and elastic from friction with the drum and other textiles.

2
Silk or delicate program at maximum 30°C

Above 30°C, the fibers shrink and lose their shine. The elastic can also deform at high temperatures.

3
Special silk detergent, light spin cycle

No enzymes, no bleach, no fabric softener. Spin cycle limited to 400 revolutions/minute. Do not wash with rough textiles.

Drying

Drying is as important as washing. Two absolute rules:

🚫
Never tumble dry

Heat destroys silk fibers and irreversibly deforms the elastic, even on a delicate program.

🚫
Never direct sunlight

UV rays degrade pigments and yellow light colors. Dry in the shade in a ventilated area only.

Hang the cap in the open air in the shade or lay it flat on a clean towel. Silk dries quickly, allow 1 to 2 hours under normal conditions.

Mistakes to absolutely avoid

Washing above 30°C

Silk shrinks and permanently loses its shine. The elastic deforms and the cap no longer holds your hair properly.

Using fabric softener

Coats the fibers and reduces the natural slipperiness of silk — exactly the property you want to preserve.

Using bleach or enzyme detergent

Destroys sericin, the natural protein in silk responsible for its softness. Enzymes gradually degrade the fiber.

Twisting or wringing forcefully

Breaks the fibers and deforms the elastic. Always press gently.

The same rules apply to the care of your silk pillowcase — mulberry silk requires the same precautions regardless of the product.

Care and storage

  • Complete drying is mandatory before any storage
  • Store in a breathable cotton bag, never in plastic
  • Away from direct light and heat
  • Have 2 to 3 caps in rotation for nightly protection and extended lifespan

Frequently asked questions

Cold or lukewarm water at maximum 30°C, special silk detergent, press gently without rubbing or twisting, rinse thoroughly with cold water, press between two towels to remove excess water, air dry in the shade. Never wring or twist.

Yes, with these precautions: delicate or silk program at maximum 30°C, mandatory laundry bag, special silk detergent without enzymes or bleach, spin cycle limited to 400 revolutions/minute. Do not wash with rough textiles.

Every 2 to 3 uses for standard use. If you use a lot of hair products (oils, creams), wash every 2 nights to avoid product buildup that reduces the slipperiness of silk. Have 2 to 3 caps in rotation.

A special silk detergent or a mild shampoo, without enzymes, bleach, or fabric softener. The enzymes present in standard detergents attack sericin, the natural protein in silk. Fabric softener reduces the slipperiness of silk, exactly what you want to preserve.

Between 2 and 5 years with proper care, depending on frequency of use. This is why we recommend having 2 to 3 caps in rotation — this reduces the washing frequency of each cap and extends their lifespan.
